Parts of a French Press
In this section we will be breaking down the parts of the French Press and learning why they do, what they do. French press coffee makers have three main parts: a carafe, a stand and a plunger.

Lids
Most French presses come with just one lid that includes the plunger and filter. However, some models are now starting to include a flat "storage lid." That way people don't have to account for the height from the fully extended plunger in their refrigerators. Either work for storage purposes.

The Plunging Lid
The plunger has several smaller parts attached to it: a metal filter, a metal crosspiece and a metal spring disk. These help to filter the ground coffee sediment from the liquid. On some models, these parts can be disassembled to allow for more thorough cleanings between uses.
Beaker, Base and Handle

These are all usually attached in one piece. The beaker or carafe is the clear material holding the liquid. This can be made out of plastic or glass. The base is the outside structure that helps the whole unit stand up. Attached to the base is the handle. On higher priced models that utilize the French press to brew hot coffee, the handle helps distribute heat evenly.
